GM investit dans la recharge sans fil avec Powermat

General Motors et Powermat, un pionnier dans la technologie de recharge sans fil, ont annoncé la signature d'un accord commercial qui fera disparaître d'ici la mi-2012 la nécessité de câbles de recharge pour les dispositifs électroniques domestiques de nombreux véhicules Chevrolet, Buick, GMC et Cadillac.

GM Ventures, la filiale de capital à risque de l'entreprise, investira dans Powermat 5 millions de dollars US en vue d'accélérer le développement de la technologie et de soutenir les efforts de croissance mondiale des activités de Powermat.

La technologie de Powermat permet de charger efficacement, sans fil mais en toute sécurité, des appareils électroniques tels que smartphones, lecteurs MP3 et autres consoles de jeu. Elle se présente sous la forme d'un tapis ou d'une tablette où il suffit de poser son appareil électronique compatible pour que celui-ci se recharge automatiquement.

La Chevrolet Volt électrique sera un des premiers véhicules du groupe US à proposer cette technologie qui devrait révolutionner la manière de recharger des appareils électroniques dans une voiture.

Powermat, une société privée, a été fondée en 2007 et propose actuellement des appareils domestiques de recharge sans câblage, dans bon nombre de magasins de détails comme Best Buy, Target et Wal-Mart.

New /// Buick Verano 2011

Au Salon de Détroit, Buick présentera son nouveau modèle Verano, une berline compacte de luxe, une première pour Buick dans ce segment. Ce modèle est basé sur l'Opel/Vauxhall Astra.

La nouvelle Verano est la troisième nouveauté en deux ans pour le constructeur américain Buick, filiale haut de gamme de GM (juste en dessous de Cadillac). La Verano est en fait le dernier modèle d'un programme de renaissance de Buick entamé avec l'Enclave, suivie par les LaCrosse et Regal. Cette 4 portes est basée sur l'Astra que l'on connaît chez nous et préfigure donc la variante Sedan de la compacte allemande.

Pour atteindre le niveau de luxe souhaité, la Verano possède notamment dix airbags, un volant chauffant et une installation audio-entertainment connectée au smartphone du conducteur. L'habitacle est identique à celui des Astra, même s'il apparaît nettement plus cossu.

En attendant un futur moteur 2.0 Turbo, la Verano se contente d'un quatre-cylindres essence Ecotec 2.4 de 177 ch (132 kW) et 230 Nm. Ce bloc est couplé à une boîte automatique à six rapports.

L'objectif de Buick avec la Verano est d'attirer une nouvelle clientèle, plus jeune.

New /// Buick GL8 2011

La marque Buick, filliale mi-luxe mi-généraliste de GM, a dévoilé la nouvelle génération de son van, le GL8. Ce (très grand) modèle est réservé au marché chinois.

Le Buick GL8 est... imposant! Et c'est peu dire. Avec son empattement de 3 088 mm et sa longueur de 5 256 mm, il est parfaitement adapté à son marché de prédilection: la Chine. Il y sera lancé en janvier prochain.

Tant qu'à faire, ce grand monospace se la joue aussi haut de gamme. Développé en partenariat avec le constructeur local SAIC, le GL8 s'offre à bord une ambiance lumineuse bleutée du plus bel effet qui illumine des matériaux qui semblent être choisit avec soin. On remarque aussi le double toit ouvrant, le système audio Bose avec 10 haut-parleur, le système de divertissement pour les places arrière, les portes arrière électriques, ou encore les 6 (voire 7) places assises.

Sous son capot, le monospace Buick s'offre les services d'un 2.4-Ecotec essence ou d'un 3.0 V6 SIDI essence lui-aussi. Une transmission auto à 6 rapport est au programme dans les deux cas.

2012 Buick Verano Pricing Estimates, Preliminary Engine Specs and Trim Levels Leaked

The last time we heard about General Motors' forthcoming Buick Verano was back in October when the company teased the U.S. version of the already revealed in China, Excelle GT, with a single cropped picture. Now, the folks over at GM Inside News forum managed to get their hands on the car's preliminary specs through a leaked online order study destined for Buick dealers.

According to the official document, the Verano will be available with the 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine, coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Peak output will be 180 hp and 172 lb-ft (233 Nm) of torque. Customers will have the option to choose between four trim levels, each building up on the previous version.

The base version is codenamed “1SB Cloth Base” and comes with a cloth interior. It has an estimated MSRP ranging from $20,900 to $21,500.

Next up is the “1SD Cloth Mid-Level” that adds a variety of features such as remote start, dual-zone automatic air conditioning and sound system with Bluetooth connectivity. The MSRPs range between $22,100 and $22,700.

The third variant is the “1SG Cloth Mid-Level”, which ups the luxury ante with power adjustable driver seat, heated mirrors, rear park assist and dimming inside rear view mirror. Base price for this variant is estimated to be in the $23,300 - $23,900 range.

Last but not least, Buick will offer the range topping “1SL Leather Up-Level”, boasting heated seats and steering wheel, keyless entry system, premium Bose sound system and 18-inch alloys. This version is estimated to cost up to $26,200.

If true, Buick will be charging mid-size sedan money - think Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata- for a car that belongs in the subcompact category along with its Chevrolet Cruze twin and the Ford Focus. Of course, being that we're still more than six months away from the Buick Verano's market launch in the States, one should take these prices for what they are: estimates and not final prices.

All-New Buick GL8 Minivan Fully Revealed, Only for China

After selling more than 330,000 units of the original Buick GL8 since 1999, General Motors unveiled an all-new version of its MPV model featuring several key improvements and innovations, destined exclusively for the China market. Built by the firm's Shanghai GM joint venture, the new GL8 is said to offer an "unmistakable Buick experience" - always according to the automaker.

“The new GL8 was developed by Shanghai GM in cooperation with the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) in Shanghai with the specific needs of our customers in mind”, said Terry Johnsson, Shanghai GM Vice President of Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. “It offers everything that consumers have come to expect from Buick, including a dynamic, smooth, quiet and comfortable ride. Like its predecessor, the new GL8 is the right product at the right time.”

Based on the 2009 Buick Business hybrid concept model and boasting the “classic waterfall grille”, the GL8 features several sharp edges running from front to rear, giving it a modern look. Large, tear-shaped headlamps cut into the fenders, while LEDs incorporated into the tail lamps and rear bumper.

With a wheelbase measuring 3,088 mm (122 inches), the MPV provides a spacious cabin for up to 7 passengers. Being a luxury oriented people carrier, the GL8 features all the usual amenities such as genuine leather seats, panorama sunroof, electric sliding door and lift door, high-quality Bose sound system, 7-inch touch screen up front and 10.2-inch HD display for the next two rows. OnStar is also on the menu.

The engine range kicks off with a 2.4-liter Ecotec four-pot and tops out with a 3.0-liter V6 SIDI direct injection powerplant. A six-speed automatic is standard on all variants.

For enhanced safety, ESP will do its best to prevent accidents and certain models can also be specified with 6 airbags.

The new GL8 will hit the Chinese market in January 2011, for a retail price of between RMB 288,000 and RMB 388,000 [US$43,300 - 58,300]. In parallel, Shanghai GM will offer an updated 2011 model of the current generation, featuring the 2.4-liter engine and six-speed automatic, targeting the upper-medium segment. General Motors claims that this dual-model strategy will result in better market coverage.

New /// Buick Regal GS 2012

L'Opel Insignia, dont le succès ne se dément pas, est depuis peu vendue aussi aux Etats-Unis sous le nom de Buick Regal. La berline sera bientôt aussi proposée dans une version sportive GS de 220 chevaux.

Lors du lancement du modèle, voici quelques mois, seul un moteur essence de 2,4 litres était disponible sous le capot de la Regal. L'offre a été élargie à l'occasion du Salon de Los Angeles avec l'arrivée d'une version sportive "GS" animée par un moteur 2 litres turbo de 220 ch et 440 Nm de couple.

Le calibrage de la direction, l'équipement et la suspension ont été adaptées aux exigences du marché US.

GM: Volt to hit the Market as Scheduled in November 2010, One More Brand to get Plug-in Hybrid

Despite the looming bankruptcy and the other serious issues facing the company, General Motors' global product development chief, Tom Stephens told journalists on the sidelines of an event at the University of Michigan that the American automaker is on plan with the development of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid. "At this point in time, I know of no reason why we can't be in production by November of 2010," Stephens said.

Stephens, who replaced Bob Lutz as GM's vice chairman of global product development on April 1st, 2009, also told reporters that the automaker has not made a decision yet on which of the remaining three brands (Cadillac, Buick and GMC) after the axing of Pontiac and the sale of Saturn and Saab would get a vehicle based on the Volt's plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

"It's best utilized in urban vehicles," said Stephens. "We have to consider what is the usage of the person buying the vehicle. For a commuter who drives 40 miles a day and takes it shopping on weekend, it's the perfect application.".

That said, we reckon that that one of the most obvious and less inexpensive options in terms of development costs would be a Buick model based on the small sedan that the company is currently working on as it uses the same Delta platform as the Volt (as well as the new Astra and Chevy Cruze).

Carscoop's spy photographers recently captured a camouflaged prototype of the Astra/Cruze/Volt-based small sedan during testing in Germany, however it's not clear if the sedan is designed only for the Chinese market or if it will also head to the States.
