SCOOP: 2012 BMW 5-Series Hybrid Spied on the Roads of Munich

It's no secret that BMW is preparing a hybrid version of its latest generation [F10] 5-Series sedan as the Bavarian automaker teased the model at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show with the Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid study. And even though the prototype model seen in our latest spy pictures carries the 535i badge, the "Hybrid Test Vehicle" label on the boot pretty much explains everything.

Being a test mule, the prototype doesn't feature any of the (few) unique styling cues of the concept model, such as the LED strips, different front apron and special alloy wheels, but we assume these details will make it into the production car.

Underneath the body work, we expect to see a similar setup to the concept vehicle, which made use of BMW's straight-six gasoline engine with TwinPower Turbo technology (same as the one found in the 535i), an eight-speed automatic transmission, and an electric drive capable of delivering up to 54HP (40kW). Given that the 3.0-liter turbo is rated in the U.S. at 300 hp, the combined system output should be around the 340 hp mark.

According to BMW, the hybrid powertrain reduces both fuel consumption and emissions by more than 10 per cent over the conventional version, while it also allows all-electric, zero-emission motoring at low speeds.

The production version of the 5-Series Hybrid could be introduced at a major international car show as early as next year with sales most likely to follow in 2012.

Reader Snaps 2010 BMW 5-Series GT and 2010 BMW X1 SUV on the Road

Yes, we know, we've already seen the BMW 5-Series GT while we've also posted a mega gallery of the final prototype model of the X1 SUV at the official presentation in Spain, but we just love it when Carscoop readers go all '007' on us. And that's precisely what Gal Leibovich did when he 'stumbled' upon both Bavarian models while vacationing in Germany. Gal was apparently on a spying spree as he also spotted a heavily camouflaged 2010 5-Series sedan, but the test driver was on to him and left the scene in a hurry before our man could take some more photos.

Both the BMW 5-Series GT crossover thingy and the X1 compact SUV are scheduled to make their first public appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September with sales starting (in Europe) in the fall of 2009. Great work Gal!

VIDEO: 2010 BMW 5-Series Prototype Gets Pulled Over by German Police!

Believe it or not, a 2010 BMW 5-Series sedan test mule was pulled over by German police on the Autobahn and the incident was briefly filmed by a camera woman from 'TVnews Hessen' that happened to be at the right place, at the right time - or at least that's the word on the street. According to the German media, the officers found the riveted-body of the BMW 5-Series prototype suspicious so they decided to take a closer look at the car - yeah right, as if it's the first time that cops see a camouflaged car on the Autobahn... But anyway. Skip the jump to watch the video that includes exterior and interior footage of the bimmer (allegedly a 535d) as it was inspected by the police.

BMW 5-Series GT: What Should the 'GT' Stand For?

You've got to love those marketing folks. I mean, '5-Series GT' sounds pretty cool and certainly much better than the initial 'PAS' moniker that stands for "Progressive Activity Sedan." To be totally honest, the newest 5er justifies the 'Gran Turismo' badge in the sense that it has the core qualities of a GT: it promises to cover large distances super fast and in absolute comfort for its passengers.

But somehow a vehicle that looks like it tries to merge a station-wagon with an MPV and an SUV with a sedan and a coupe, all at the same time, doesn't quite sit well with us a GT, at least not in the classic way we interpret it. So, as our friend 'Sergejs' humorously proposed, enlighten or amuse us with what you think the acronym "GT" should stand for in the new bimmer by leaving us a comment below.

BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo: Updated Album with 70 Photos and Official Details

So much for BMW's preparations to take the wraps off the production-ready 5-Series Gran Turismo this upcoming weekend. Following an earlier leak this morning, a string of photos made their way around the internet revealing the controversial model in detail. As anticipated, the 5-Series GT has remained faithful to the concept car that was previewed for the first time at the Geneva motor show in March. To put it bluntly, the GT is quite possibly, one of the most weirdest cars ever produced by BMW. First of all, it's no Gran Turismo, at least not in the way we think of GTs.

BMW 5-Series GT - CarscoopWhat we see as an outlandish fusion of bits and pieces from sedans, station wagons, fastbacks, coupes, MPVs, SUVs and bulgy buttocks, the Bavarian automaker views as a SAV which is short for 'Sport Activity Vehicle' - yes, something in the likes of an X6 saloon. The 5-Series GT supposedly blends the sporty shape of a fastback with the elevated seating position of an SUV, the cargo-hauling versatility of an MPV and the roominess of a 7-Series. Go figure.

The idea may sound nice on paper, but judging by these photos, we're not at all convinced about the aesthetic result. Could be that the 5-Series GT looks better in person, but we wouldn't place any bets on it.

BMW 5-Series GT - CarscoopThe car's exterior and interior styling is evidently influenced by the new 7-Series, though with a somewhat sportier flair, as well as by the 2008 CS sport sedan concept car. Unique features include frameless doors -a first for a BMW sedan, a two-piece rear hatch that can open either as a whole or partially through a trapdoor underneath the window and sliding rear seats that can move fore-and-aft. Unlike the concept car, the 5-Series GT will be offered with a five-seat layout as standard, but buyers will be able to opt for a pair of individual rear bucket sport seats.

The GT rides on an modified version of the next-generation 5-Series sedan's platform. Measuring 4,998 mm (197-inches) in length, 1,901 mm (74.8-inches) in width and 1,559 mm (61.4-inches) in height with a limo-like 3,070 mm (120.9-inches) wheelbase, the GT is larger than the current 5-Series in every dimension.

BMW 5-Series GT - CarscoopUp until now, we only know of three power plants that will be made available on the 5-Series GT. These include two gasoline engines, the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight-six with 306HP for the 535i GT that goes from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in 6.3 seconds and the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 408HP for the 550i GT that hits the 100km/h mark in 5.5 seconds. There's also a 3.0-liter turbo diesel with 245HP for the 530d GT that sprints from standstill to 100km/h (62mph) in 6.9 seconds. All model variants come as standard with the eight-speed automatic transmission that was previously available only in the BMW 760i V12.

The public unveiling of the 5-Series GT will take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September. Sales are expected to start on both sides of the Atlantic by winter 2009.
